‘You can count the apples, but you can’t count the seeds.’ These words resonated with me this week as soon as my mission president said them at our zone training. He continued on to explain that we have an impact that we do not realize, and one that we can not realize on this earth life. We may be able to count the number of people we find, the people we baptize, or the people who come back to church, but we will never be able to count the hearts that we touch, the moments we inspired, and the faith that we helped plant.
This week I saw a glimpse of how many seeds we can’t count. Let me tell you more about Mark,as promised last week. Early last year, Mark watched some videos and interviews of Lindsey Stirling and noticed something was different about her. He didn’t know what, but he knew that he wanted what she had. She was happy, and not this fake celebrity 32 fake white teeth smiling happy, but something genuine. He researched a little more, found out she was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and requested a copy of the Book of Mormon. He expected it to come in the mail, but a few days later two Elders showed up at his door in Berlin. Mark just wanted a book, not missionary discussions, but the missionaries worked their magic and within a matter of weeks atheist Mark was baptized and confirmed a member of the restored church. A short time after that, one of the missionaries gave him their sister’s name and email address.
Meet Whitney. She was living in Utah working and finding her away around this crazy thing called life. Mark Facebook’d her and said her sister was serving in his ward. Little Facebook conversations quickly turned to Skype chats, which quickly turned to real life visits. Whitney, one of the most spiritually in-tuned people I have been blessed to meet, took a leap of faith and moved to Berlin for Mark. They started dating (although I’m not sure when they had time, since they pretty much spent all day helping out the missionaries with lessons) and eventually marriage was not a matter of if but when…. so needless to say we were shocked when Whitney casually came up to us and said ‘Mark is working on his papers.’ (what, visa papers? marriage license?) ‘His mission papers.’ *insert jaw dropping moment* To be honest, we all thought they were crazy at first! But like I mentioned, Whitney is one of the most spiritually in tune people I know.
A few weeks ago Mark finally got his call to South Africa! Early this morning, Whitney flew back to Florida (shout out to Hannah!) and will continue her life there as she waits for Mark. (She will have a blog no doubt, and as soon as it is up I will link it here!) This love story is so much more than 2 high school sweethearts waiting. This story is one of the most remarkable things I have been able to witness, and it’s just the beginning. Mark and Whitney both realize that our influences extend past what we can count.#ibelieveinmarkandwhitney
